Growing up in a small town in Brazil I was always fascinated by how my grandmother would call for carrots and lettuce and my grandfather would quickly gather some from his vegetable garden and join us in the kitchen. Not only was it amazing to see the fresh vegetables go from the ground to our plates in a few minutes, but the taste was incredible.
Since moving to the US as a teenager, I’ve grown accustomed to the much more convenient access to food, and I avoided even venturing out to my backyard let alone digging into the dirt. Recently I’ve realized I miss that taste. The incredible freshness and crispness of the vegetables, combined with the fact that I know exactly how they have grown, is what has motivated me to start my own vegetable garden. And while I’ve realized it’ll take a long time before I can produce the bountiful harvests my grandfather did, I’m ready to learn!
